We know there are satellites up there, but those are only good enough for navigating your car. Pilots and the FAA really rely on even more precise GPS WAAS location data. Add some different satellites and some ground stations and lots of math and we get WAAS precision. The WAAS system was developed right here in Fullerton at Hughes Aircraft (now Raytheon).
